Like millions of Kenyans, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa was raised in a village after being born to parents of modest resources.
The former CEO of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) grew up in Khabondi village, which is located in Kakamega County's Mumias East constituency.

Fernandes Barasa started his education at a neighborhood elementary school.
After graduating from Naitiri High School, he continued on to Kenyatta University to earn degrees in accounting and finance for master's, doctorate, and bachelor's degrees.
He enrolled in KU in 1993 in order to earn an accounting bachelor's degree, which he completed in 1997. From 1996 to 1997, he presided over the Commerce Accounting Students Association (CASA).
