On March 8, 2024, President William Ruto appointed and promoted various military personnel.
Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri was promoted to Lieutenant General and then to acting Vice Chief of Defence Forces which later to acting capacity upon the death of General Ogolla.
However on 2nd May 2024 General charles Kahariri was appointed a 4-star general and therefore the chief of defence forces (CDF).
Kahariri succeeds Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi Maina, who retired from the service after 42 years.
The Head of State also promoted Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus to Lieutenant General and appointed him as the Kenya Army's new Commander.
Major General Tarus previously worked as the Deputy in the same office. He succeeds Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru, who retired after 39 years of service.
