Derek Emmanuel Barbosa (born 4 April 1974), better known as Chino XL, is an East Orange, New Jersey-based rapper. He began his career as a member of the duo Art of Origin, releasing two singles on Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. The band split up in 1994, but Chino XL stayed in America and released his debut album, Here to Save You All, in 1996.
Barbosa was released from his contract with American in 1997, when the label changed distributors from Warner Bros. Records to Columbia. Chino XL was then resigned by Warner Bros., but his 1999 sophomore album was repeatedly delayed, and he eventually left the label.
